KC Hospitals Reap Rewards with Reduced Energy Consumption
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - P1 Service’s Frank Tanner gave a talk “Reducing Energy Usage and Cost in Hospitals” at the February meeting of the Kansas City Association of Healthcare Engineers (KCAHE).
Joining him in the presentation were KCP&L and Missouri Gas Energy (MGE) staff members, who encouraged hospital staff to consider all of the rebate programs that are available to them. Both utilities offer rebate programs to businesses.
Tanner, a member of the P1 Performance Solutions team, has worked with several area hospitals to reduce their energy consumption and qualify for rebates from KCP&L and MGE. In 2015, KCP&L distributed $19 million in rebates to commercial customers. P1 Service’s Performance Solutions team netted area businesses and hospitals more than $1M in rebates, including:
- Upgrades to a hospital’s chillers, cooling towers and pumps, which resulted in a significant rebate from KCP&L.
- Improvements to a hospital’s indoor air quality and reduction in energy usage
- The replacement of two boiler burners with high-efficiency modulating burners at a hospital, earning it an MGE rebate.
Tanner told his audience that benchmarking is an extremely important component of energy savings – building owners must be able to measure their building against peer facilities and set goals. After facilities managers have worked to find solutions and implement them, they also need to continually measure and verify their energy consumption – which may lead to more goals and new opportunities for savings.
